Newlife 0.6.9

 Hello everyone,

Newlife 0.6.9 has been released. Early-access Patrons can find it in the creations section here. The changelog is below.

The previous version is now public. You can download it using the links on the right-hand side of the blog. The public version's changelog is here.

As usual, saved files & templates from older versions probably won't work with newer ones.

For new players - just use one of the links to the right to get a zipfile containing Newlife. Once unzipped, you'll see a folder containing .jar and .exe files. Either one of these will run the game.
For either version you'll need to have Java installed. A lot of programs use Java so you might well already have it. If the jar shows up as an unrecognised file type, then you probably don't. In that case you can get it from http://www.java.com/
The exe should tell you if you don't have the right version on your computer, but you'll still need to install java to run the game.
There's a guide for new players here which includes some troubleshooting tips for installation & downloading.

This release makes the obvious addition. Next will be PMW, and then the rival will return in 0.6.11.

Major changes & additions:

  • The PC and her lovers can now indulge in 69, a position which can be accessed by either partner starting from a lying-down makeout.

  • It is now theoretically possible for the PC to “defeat” the office rival by getting the upper hand across multiple events. However, because adding the 69 scene distracted me from rival content, there isn't much support for this. After the PMW release I'll be adding events that give the PC straightforward options to turn the tables but right now it's only something you'll see in fairly niche situations. Notably, you get a lot of defeat points if she gets pregnant, so following that (extremely obscure) path in the coffee-spill event will be the main way you'll see this. I don't really recommend going out of your way to see this right now: there'll be more scenes to support it in a few releases time.

Minor changes:

  • Removed “Darcey” as a female name because it's too similar to “Darcie”. Added a few extra names (Libby, Lois and Nicole).

  • Slightly increased the arousal gain from the PC touching herself during oral when she has the clever hands trait.

  • Halved liking loss from negative enjoyment during sex, which should make relationships with inept lovers a bit easier to build.

  • Added some content requested by Gatekeeper to the impregnator-friend socialisation scene where a baby-crazy PC can end up in bed with him.

  • Added a randomise button to the female character creation screen, as requested in a blog comment. This can be found on the right-hand side of the screen, above the load/save template buttons. This re-rolls character creation. Male-start characters use the same male character as a basis and keep the same randomisation level (tweaked, physical-only, chaos etc). Female-start characters use chaos level of randomisation.

Changes for user-submitted content:

  • Added LIKES_COOKING to the enum documentation. Thanks to Stochastic for reporting this omission.

  • Fixed a documentation issue reported by Stochastic where PILLS_SABOTAGED was listed as a male-only trait when it's actually female-only.

  • Updated the code to automatically stop the PC taking the pill if she's baby-crazy when a temporary trait is assigned. Previously this was done manually in the charm-training scene which was the only place in the main game that temp traits are currently used, but wouldn't have affected custom scenes using them. If you want to have text that checks for the PC having previously been on the pill then you need to call it before you actually assign the temp trait.

  • New potential scene transition for custom scenes: SIXTY_NINE.

Bugfixes:

  • Fixes to text issues. Thanks to Saint Destiny, AnarChYsT and Customescenes for reporting some of these.

  • Pregnant characters will no longer get the “you want a baby” choice when they notice a broken condom. Thanks to customescenes for reporting this.

  • Fixed a bug where breaking up with your bf would stop the PC using the pill. This may be related to an issue reported by AnarChYsT where the PC was unexpectedly being taken off the pill.

  • Fixed an issue reported by Newface where the tasty_sperm trait might be incorrectly added to an NPC.

  • Fixed an issue reported by Newface where talented-tongue and magic-fingers were not checking for inept-lover when they were added, potentially leading to an NPC having conflicting traits.

Enjoy the new version, and let me know if you find any bugs!

  1. It's the best time to add 69 to the game, seeing as it's a 0.6.9 version :DDDDDDD

    ... I'll see myself out.

  2. I know it was for the last update, but was curious what those 7 sub-types for the office rival were specifically.

    1. One picked at random from all eligible options:

Seductive: If the PC is sultry, refined or beautiful (the reason she hates the pc depends on which, e.g. a sultry PC is seen as a competitor while she hates a refined pc for judging her).
Professional: If the PC is relaxed
Lazy: If the PC is ambitious
Posh: If the PC is down-to-earth
Nice: If the PC is bitchy
Prudish: If the PC is sultry (this trait unlocks 2 possible rival types)
Bully: If no other rival type was unlocked

  3. I have a suggestion: enforced polygyny.

Let's say you marry a cheater who is also a jerk. If you catch him cheating the first time, then he can insist that he should be allowed to have as many "side dishes" as he wants. If you have low self-esteem, you'll feel compelled to concede and let him, afterwards he'll cheat much more often and won't even bother hiding it from you, maybe even flaunting it. If he "likes to share", then he could say that you're fully allowed to sleep around as well. If not, then he'll possessively insist that you remain only his.

    1. Thanks for the suggestion! I probably won't be able to fit that in during the work & careers releases, but I'll jot it down and I may be able to get to it at some point.

  4. Hello, just stopping by to say I would like to request an option/cheat to enable all friend slots regardless of PC personality/traits. I enjoy playing as a shy character but I find it frustrating to be limited to only 1 friend. Thanks for the hard work developing the game, Wishing you success in the future.

    1. Thanks! I've had some feedback in this direction over PM on patreon as well, and I'd like at address it at some point. Ideally this would come with some UI updates as well (to allow an arbitrary number of friends) which makes it a bit tricky to fit in though.

  5. I'm not sure if it's a bug, but the conversations with the cooking instructor after lessons don't actually seem to increase your relationship with them at all, or if they do, it's too slow for them to be viable as a relationship option within a 52 week game.

    1. Thanks for letting me know! I'm having a hard time finishing off the core content for the next release so I haven't been able to look this over, but I will check it out in January.

  6. Hello, first of all, thanks for all the great work you have done so far. I just wanted to request the kids development, so they can go to kindergarden, to school, grow up...Wish you lot of success.
