Newlife 0.3.16

Hello everyone!

Version 0.3.16 of Newlife is finished and I've released it on Patreon. Early-access Patrons can find it in the creations section here. The changelog is below.

Version of 0.3.15 is now public. You can download it using the links on the right-hand side of the blog. The 0.3.15 changelog is here.

As usual, saved files & templates from older versions probably won't work with newer ones.

For new players - just use one of the links to the right to get either the jar or the exe version. You only need one or the other - not both. I recommend trying the jar first.

For either version you'll need to have Java installed. A lot of programs use Java so you might well already have it. If the jar shows up as an unrecognised file type, then you probably don't. In that case you can get it from
The exe should tell you if you don't have the right version on your computer, but you'll still need to install java to run the game.
There's a guide for new players here which includes some troubleshooting tips for installation & downloading.

This update adds a new scene which finishes off a certain event chain that was previously missing a conclusion. While I might go back for minor adjustments, it shouldn't need any more significant new additions.

Here's the full changelog:
Major changes & additions:
  • Improved handling of the taciturn npc trait throughout many scenes in the game.
  • Added a new scene that can appear as an alternative to the usual one when selecting a certain activity.

Minor changes & bugfixes:
  • Fixes to text issues. Thanks Joe Schmoe, BleepBloop, Cubano and Axeon for reporting problems they found.
  • Charming and Taciturn are now opposing traits, as they don't really make sense together. If you had a custom npc with both then you should remove one or they won't load in the new version.
  • Added some new future-love-life options to the female-start endgame sequence.
  • Men's descriptions will now tell you if you've had sex together, unless this would be made redundant by other parts of the description (such as having children together)
  • The prenatal class activity is now disabled when the player has max childcare skill.
  • Fixed a bug where you could still watch films on dates if you buy a TV and a media player but then the TV gets broken. The stress benefit to the rest activity from having a media player is now also nullified in this situation.
  • Fixed a bug where special npcs that were supposed to be restricted to certain scenes could still show up at the dance contest.
Enjoy the new version, and let me know if you find any bugs!

  1. "Added a new scene that can appear as an alternative to the usual one when selecting a certain activity."

You're a terrible tease, you know that? At least give us a little hint so we can test out the new scene. You want to know it's in working order, don't you?

    1. This particular style of "full" changelog is currently the primary reason I'm strongly debating stopping support on patreon. I don't have time to go through however many possible permutations of characters and events there are now, so if I'm not bothering with playing the game at early access time, then it's hard to justify paying for early access.

I get there are some people that like puzzles, I do, but there's easily ways to put up partial changelogs and full changelogs so that each group can have their preferred piece of cake, and happy patrons are consistently paying ones.

    2. Yea, I also wish you could have a separate changelog where you are explicit about new scenes and how they're triggered.

    3. Some of the other changes in this release are a bit of a clue.
I don't like explicitly spelling out random events because I want them to potentially be a surprise, especially to newer players who are focusing on the game as a whole rather than trying to get one particular scene.

If you're having trouble finding a scene then ask on the Patreon thread. Either one of the users there will tell you, or if people are having trouble finding it then I'll chime in.

    4. You have to go to the gym to get the scene

  2. I though the opposite of TACITURN is BOASTFULL and the opposite of CHARMING is CRUDE or SLEAZY..

    1. Those traits are still oppostites, that doesn't change. Really, Taciturn should be opposed to any trait that involves talking - I considered making it opposed to Sleazy too, but Sleazy also affects non-verbal behaviour so I decided to leave that one.

    2. Can't someone be charming without speaking? I can roll a shy character in your game and use that trait to charm certain NPC's.

    3. I agree. I don't get how Charming and Taciturn conflict. The definition of taciturn is someone who is reserved or doesn't talk much. They still talk, just not a lot. Isn't it possible that that kind of person is still able to be charming with the little they do say?

I realize this is a move to add more content to taciturn npc like you wanted, but I'm not sure I like this change . - .

    4. Charming's appearences in Newlife are virtually all verbal. I envisage charming men in the game as being smooth-talking seducer types.
While not technically a negative trait it can border on being two-faced - in particular with the game mechanic that lets charming npcs that fake their behaviour by acting romantic even when this doesn't match their actual feelings.

By contrast, the Taciturn trait represents someone being the "strong silent type". In game it's only used for Horse, who is very much not supposed to be a smooth-talker. He's supposed to contrast heavily with his friend, who isn't charming either but who represents the talkative extreme of Sleazy with his willingness to make dirty comments to a woman he's just met in the gym.

    5. I assume it's just an issue of keeping certain text from showing up for guys with one of those traits. If you've got a line like "He tells you that he wants to feel your feminine lips dance upon his shaft so you may slake your thirst with the nectar of his manhood." you could just decide to flag it as a line that shows up for all NPCs with the charming trait, and not have to worry if he's also taciturn and being unnaturally verbose. I do agree it would be no fun if taciturn guys just clammed up all the time, so as long as they get their own "He says you should suck it." line it's not a loss.

    6. I like the idea of just flagging certain texts instead of having them locked out. I could be wrong, but off the top of my head, maybe have Taciturn handle like cold-hearted? I believe you can be charming and cold at the same time.

    7. Instead of locking out one or the other personality, I mean.

  3. I apologise if this isn't the place to post suggestions but I couldn't find anywhere else, love the game btw, first off is after you visit ivy and choose to stay a woman or keep your identity I thought it would be good if the game would then carry on like normal and keep going forever because the worst thing about your game is that I have to stop playing it after 52 in-game weeks :(, on the public patreon version I used to hold my finger on the 9 key when setting the game length. Second thing is to have a way to order specific clothes to appear in the shop next time you go, with all their available traits pick-able, so I could order a thin black lowcut nearly transparent shift dress because at the moment I find myself saving then going to the shop to see if my desired clothing item has spawned and reloading if it hasn't, sometimes simple items such as pink boyshorts simply refuse to spawn but waiting for the perfect bodycon dress is torture. These two additions would make the game perfect. I hope I haven't come off as whiny and needy in this post, I really enjoy the game and wish you the best with it, keep up the good work!

    1. Hi, first of all I recommend putting some paragraph breaks in your comments - it makes them much much easier to read.

There will eventually be a non-cheat option to carry on after the ending, but only when there's enough late-game content to justify it. Probably sometime after marriage is in.

I plan to have a "design your dress" scene when it comes to buying a wedding dress, but that's about as far as I intend to go with custom clothing. The clothing system isn't well set up to easily allow a scene that lets items be customised however the player wants.

  4. "Horse runs a hand over your body, lingering over your flat stomach. Then he takes out a condom and puts it on." I got this text even though the character is visibly pregnant.

  5. Playing on 0.3.15, i noticed that if you go to buy lingerie on a date and the makeout scene is not triggered, and you pay for the lingerie yourself, you actually wear it out of the store and for the rest of the date. Even though it SAYS you change into your street clothes, your character description says you're wearing the lingerie.

    1. Thanks! I'll fix that for the next version
