Hi all,
The next release will be out tomorrow. It focuses on adding support for written scene submissions.
In what should be an unsurprising turn of events to anyone who's followed my predictions in the past, it seems I've been massively over-optimistic about how quickly I could write the documentation for this. My plan was to put out a test version to a small group mid-month, rattle off the documentation in a few days and then get seriously stuck into improving infidelity mechanics.
Instead, I'm 83 pages into the two main reference documents with more to write for them and several further pieces of documentation still not started. As such, infidelity will have to wait and I might have to rush out a first draft of the overall writing and syntax guides.
From a developer POV this is a quite productive release: there's 2 scenes (the custom scene processing one and the test scene), the example mini-scene, the aforementioned mountain of documentation, and a few small bits and pieces.
From a player's POV though, there's very little to benefit them in 0.4.10 - there aren't any actual player-submitted scenes in the game yet and I don't anticipate getting serious submitted content in the first month while people are getting used to how it works and I'm still making improvements.
So, I guess what I'm getting at, is that if you've been considering making a pledge on Patreon then it might be better to hold fire until 0.4.11 comes out, at least unless you're extremely keen to start work on your own written content.
I'll make some blog posts soon with overviews of how key aspects of submission writing will work. This will mostly be drawn directly from drafts of the documentation so I'll be keen to see what people think - I'll want to look out for common questions and make sure the docs cover them.
In the meantime, I have one question for you to ponder: which free YML editor would you recommend? I've been using a plugin for my IDE that has nice syntax highlighting and that really makes it a lot easier to write. It isn't reasonable to expect writers to use a Java IDE when they aren't even coding in Java though, so it'd be handy if there was a good free editor I could link them to in the documentation.

Newlife 0.4.9
Hello
everyone!
Newlife 0.4.9 has been released. Early-access Patrons can find it in the creations section here. The changelog is below.
The previous version is now public. You can download it using the links on the right-hand side of the blog. The public version's changelog is here.
As usual, saved files & templates from older versions probably won't work with newer ones.
For new players - just use one of the links to the right to get a zipfile containing Newlife. Once unzipped, you'll see a folder containing .jar and .exe files. Either one of these will run the game.
For either version you'll need to have Java installed. A lot of programs use Java so you might well already have it. If the jar shows up as an unrecognised file type, then you probably don't. In that case you can get it from http://www.java.com/.
The exe should tell you if you don't have the right version on your computer, but you'll still need to install java to run the game.
There's a guide for new players here which includes some troubleshooting tips for installation & downloading.
This version improves the makeout scenes and adds the ability to shop for a wedding dress.
.
Enjoy the new version, and let me know if you find any bugs!

This version improves the makeout scenes and adds the ability to shop for a wedding dress.
Major
changes & additions:
- Updated the standing makeout position to allow making out with the man behind you.
- Once engaged you can now shop for a wedding dress.
- Following an issue reported by OrangeJuice the game now tracks which men are potential fathers for any pregnancy. Some existing scenes have been modified for the situations where only one man could be the father and for when your boyfriend is not a possible dad. This may also allow improvements in the future to your character's interactions with possible fathers.
Minor
changes & bugfixes:
- Fixes to text issues. Thanks to Jason Montana, Fiery Dog Poop and Saur for reporting problems they found.
- As suggested by Der Kittin Kampf, it is now possible to customise how attracted your character is to particular male body types.
- Added a new action suggested by Gatekeeper where you can insist a man wear a condom after he's refused during a makeout. This gives him another opportunity to wear one and ends the makeout with a strong rejection if he doesn't.
- Also added another similar action that ends the makeout in a less forceful manner if neither of you had a condom in the first place.
- Improved some makeout actions
- Added some extra text to the "show off your breasts" cowgirl action, as requested by Jason Montana
- Added a couple of new makeout actions, including a dialogue one which includes some lines submitted a long time ago by (I think) Cubano.
- Added Likes_Anal to custom NPC documentation. Thanks to Saur for reporting its absence.
- Max Mustermann reported that the House Party scene wasn't handling the Always Accept Sex vow properly – fixed.
- Modified the “Exploit Friendship” action during boss-persuasion to actually require him to be a friend rather than just have high liking.
- Split the “Go to Work” activity into 3, as suggested by Monokuma: Work Hard, Normal Effort and Slack Off. These affect your stress and job performance for the week. Ambitious and Relaxed characters cannot choose the option opposite their trait.
- Following a suggestion from Monokuma, rejecting an offered promotion will stop it being offered again for a few weeks. If you get the scene where your boss needs additional persuasion then it only counts as rejecting the promotion if you leave immediately without trying anything to convince him.
- Fixed a layout issue with the mental traits panel of the character creation screen.
.
Enjoy the new version, and let me know if you find any bugs!

Tomorrow's Election
Hi all,
There's a general election here in the UK tomorrow (Thursday 8th). For some time now polls have indicated a win for the Conservatives under Theresa May, but recently the Labour party are gaining ground and it's now looking possible that the Tories might fail to get a majority.
The Conservatives have for some time now been fighting against internet pornography. This appears to be part of a wider attempt to control how people use the internet with several laws coming in over the last few years and more planned for the future.
The best-known of these laws is the Investigatory Powers Act 2016 aka the "Snooper's Charter", but as an adult game developer, the one that's most concerning is the Digital Economy Act - one I posted about before the last election.
In particular, part 3 of this law involves extensive regulation of websites that provide adult content. No longer will it be enough for a site to rely on an "Are you over 18" page. Instead, they will now have to *prove* that their visitors are over 18 before showing them any adult content, including free samples. This means that to comply with the law they'll need all their visitors to provide personal information, most likely credit-card details, before getting access to any content whatsoever.
It's taken the tories several years to implement it, but it became law on the 28th April this year. To my knowledge actual regulation and site shutdowns haven't yet begun, but it surely won't be long before that kicks in.
While this is bad enough, the Conservatives are planning more. The Conservative manifesto promises more control of the internet, dressed up as usual as "protecting children". They outright state that "we will be the global leader in the regulation of the use of personal
data and the internet" and define pornography as a "source of harm" that they plan to bring in new protections against ("We will put a responsibility on industry not to direct users – even unintentionally – to hate speech, pornography, or other sources of harm").
We're currently standing at a crossroads. A tory win would probably have dramatic negative consequences for UK-based adult content creators and for the ability of UK people to access adult content online.
I'd like to urge any of you who are able to vote in the UK elections tomorrow to do so. Of course there are many things to consider when voting beyond preventing government control of the internet, but if you value being able to access adult content online then I encourage you to vote in a way that will prevent a Conservative victory.
I had thought of doing lots of research into the other parties and ranking them on their support for free expression, but given our first-past-the-post electoral system, that seems fairly pointless.
Realistically, if you're in a marginal seat and the Conservatives are one of the top two parties then the strongest non-tory party will be the best one to vote for if you want to keep the Conservatives out of power. That'll most often be Labour, but in some cases it might be the LibDems, the Greens, the SNP or one of the other regional parties.
To find out about your constituency, check the parliament site, select the Constituency Finder, enter your postcode and then check the 2015 results to see which are the strongest parties.
Here's a quick FAQ, mostly based on things people brought up before the 2015 election:
Q: How will this affect Newlife?
A: The Digital Economy Act will not affect Newlife: it defines pornography as being images, video or sound. Newlife has none of these so will not be affected. This does unfortunately mean permanently shelving some plans I had for future games that would have had images.
Financially this might benefit me as lots of Brits might not want to use adult content they have to provide personal information to see and come to text sites like mine instead. However, I'm strongly opposed to these laws even if they have a chance of working in my favour - they are just plan wrong, and I wouldn't want to profit from other people's suffering.
Of course we don't know what future laws might come in - the Conservatives haven't provided details about how they plan to restrict online pornography. It's possible that their plans might affect Newlife. It's also possible that sites I rely on like Blogger or Patreon might be affected by crackdowns on pornography and end up banning all adult content, even text-only stuff.
Q: I don't like our electoral system. Wouldn't not voting be a way of showing my lack of faith in the goverment?
A: No. If you don't vote then the message you're sending is that you do not matter. Most people who don't vote aren't doing so as a protest - they just don't care enough about who wins. If you don't vote then the government will just assume you're fine with whoever ends up winning.
Q: Won't the porn lobby block these laws?
A: To my knowledge, there is no porn lobby. The porn industry isn't powerful enough to meaningfully affect government policy, especially in the UK where it's fairly small. Besides, some of the big players support porn crackdowns because the mega-corporations have the resources to comply with even very restrictive laws while the mass of niche sites that make up a major part of their competition would struggle.
Q: The people won't stand for this!
A: You are the People! If you, as someone who cares enough about adult content to have read this entire blog post, don't care enough to vote then there's no chance that there'll be some mass protest. Besides, the Conservatives promised porn crackdowns before the 2015 election and they won that one. That victory was probably because younger voters who are more likely to enjoy adult content online are also less likely to vote. Let's change that for this election!
Q: The big tech companies won't stand for it!
A: I'd be surprised if they didn't. Major tech companies are often rather anti-sex. A few years back Google tried to ban adult blogs on Blogger, only to back down after massive outcries. A government forcing the issue could be the excuse they need to make their sites more "family-friendly" without taking the blame. Google and other big tech companies provide a lot of great services, but we can't rely on them to fight our political battles for us.
Q: It'll never happen.
A: People said that in 2015, and the Digital Economy Act has now come into law.
Q: What about Brexit?
A: That's a bit of a different issue. The right-wing press has tried to push the idea that only the Tories will go through with brexit, but I'd take that with a massive pinch of salt. Labour will certainly implement brexit. The LibDems are the party of Remain, but they aren't likely to be a major power in the next government. Overall, if you're a Remain supporter then it makes sense to oppose the Tories. If you're a Brexiter then you can also vote against them without compromising your beliefs on Brexit.
Q: What about non-UK sites?
A: The UK government has plans for them too, but they can't force them to comply with UK law. Likely they'll either need to follow the law or they'll get blocked at ISP-level for UK consumers.
Q: Can't people use VPNs or TOR to bypass restrictions?
A: Probably, but adult creators don't have that option - we need to comply with the law. Besides, Theresa May's plans for further internet regulation might include measures against TOR and/or VPNS.
Q: That's a stupid law. It'll never work.
A: I agree. However, just because it's a stupid law doesn't mean it can't be implemented and doesn't mean it can't cause a lot of hardship for people: just look at Prohibition in the US or, if I may be a little more controversial, the "war on drugs".
Q: I'm not British. Will this affect me?
A: Difficult to say. Obviously you might lose access to content made by British people if their sites get shut down. Some struggling adult sites might also fail due to the loss of income from Brits although they'd need to be on the borderline for that to happen: Brits only make up around 7% of visitors to this blog.
There might also be knock-on effects if tech companies use it as an opportunity to become more family-friendly or if other governments try to follow in the UK's lead - Protecting Children like the UK sounds a lot better as an election pledge than Censoring the Internet like China.
Q: Is there anything I can do other than voting?
A: Yes! Encourage any non-voting friends & family to go and vote as well. You could also spread the word online, but please only do so in a way that won't annoy or upset people - don't go linking to my adult blog on Mumsnet for example!
Thanks for reading this post. Progress is going fine on the next release - I haven't been able to get online for the last week and a bit, but I've still been developing the game. While adding the 'from-behind' makeout position I've also taken the opportunity to make some much-needed improvements to certain less-developed makeout actions and I hope you'll all find them to be very worthwhile. Have a good week, and let's hope for a positive outcome tomorrow!

Major
changes & additions:
- Added a new sex scene.
- Renamed the 18/19 age category to late_teens, along with a disclaimer that this means they're at least 18. This affects custom NPCs as well, so any that you've created with eighteen_nineteen as their age will need it replaced with the late_teens.
Minor
changes & bugfixes:
- Fixes to text issues. Thanks to Saur and OrangeJuice for reporting problems they found.
- Added a new trait requested by Klaus S for custom male npcs: INFERTILE. This will only ever appear on custom characters and never randomly – you need to set it in the yml file to have such a character appear. The trait makes him unable to get you pregnant, although it has no effect on in-game text – presumably neither him nor your character is actually aware of his infertility.
- Increased the relationship penalty when your partner forgets your anniversary.
- Fixed a problem with timings in the nightclub reported by OrangeJuice that could lead to the scene ending when you were deciding who to approach.
.
Enjoy the new version, and let me know if you find any bugs!

An update for voters
Hi all, just a quick update for any voter-tier patrons out there. There's 8 hours left to the deadline for the 18/19 age-category vote (https://www.patreon.com/posts/18-19-age-vote-11274440). At the time of writing, the vote is an exact tie between the top two options.
I'd obviously prefer to avoid a tie: I get a tie-breaker vote in that case, but I prefer not to have to use it. So, if you're a voter who has a preference between "eighteen" and "late teens", head over there and click your preferred option - your vote could make all the difference!

Late-teens age category
Hi all,
As you might have noticed from the last changelog there's a new age category. This is currently given the rather clumsy name "Eighteen or Nineteen". Properly it should be called "Late Teens" to be consistent with the other ages, but this isn't possible because it doesn't make it 100% clear that the character is over-18.
I've had a number of suggestions for alternatives. One was to use "Barely Legal", another to ditch the "nineteen" part and just have it be "Eighteen". I'm feeling indecisive on the subject so I'll run a vote in a week or two and let supporters decide.
If you have any other suggestions for better names, then post them in the comments and I'll include them in the vote.
The main place this is relevant is the character descriptions. The current text there is "eighteen- or nineteen-year-old woman". An example for a female NPC would be: "She's a pretty white eighteen- or nineteen-year-old woman with pale skin, light brown hair and blue eyes".
The suggested alternatives would replace this with "barely-legal woman" or "eighteen-year-old woman".
I've also considered some wordier options such as "a young white woman just a year or two shy of her twentieth birthday" or "a young white woman no more than a year or two past her eighteenth birthday" but I'm not convinced that these longer descriptions would be better to read.

This one adds the 'wedding vows' system - this will be improved and refined with new cheating content and the trying-for-baby relationship status, both of which will come in the 0.4.x updates. Vows are by default inactive until you actually get married, which isn't possible in the current version. However, there's an option to let them trigger during engagements for the time being.

Enjoy the new version, and let me know if you find any bugs!
Newlife 0.4.7 has been released.

Major
changes & additions:
- Once you're engaged you can now insist that your partner make certain promises before your marriage. He can also make demands of you. These will normally only activate once you're wed but as that isn't possible yet I've added an option to make them trigger immediately. These 'wedding vows' are treated as binding promises on whoever makes them and you won't be given the option to violate them. For instance, if you promise the never ask him to wear a condom then those actions will no longer be available with him. The baby-making vows are placeholders while the 'trying for baby' relationship status remains unimplemented – they'll be properly handled once that gets added.
- The player's age is now customisable with 4 options: 18/19, early 20s, late 20s and 30s. I believe that more players are more interested in younger categories so the random generation algorithm will tend towards those ages. Chaos mode will choose one of the two younger categories, and non-chaos mode based on a gender-bent male character won't pick an older age than the man's. This change was most recently requested by Der Kittin Kampf, but I know it's been asked for quite a few times in the past; too many to track down everyone's names – my apologies!
- One new random event. Well, technically two but the second is a path into the Vow scene above.
Minor
changes & bugfixes:
- Fixes to text issues. Thanks to Demetri, La Guide du Noob, OrangeJuice, Classique75 and Saur for reporting problems they found.
- Added 2 new baby-toy Stuff items that are buyable when you have kids, as suggested by kurono02. These increase your childcare skill when it's checked to determine your stress from parenting and whether you lose your weeknight timeslot.
- As suggested by Saint Destiny, losing your virginity as a blackjack forfeit will now have its own line when you talk to an innocent friend about your first time, similar to the sex-shop, concert and other unusual first-times.
- Added missing legwear-related text to the description when you're almost naked after changing into sexy nightwear a home – thanks to Saur for reporting this ommission.
- As requested by Saur, added “ask him to come inside” actions to the male-dominant sex scenes.
- Following a suggestion by Der Kittin Kampf, characters who max their fitness skill can now change their body-type to Toned via an optional action in the gym. This will also adjust current and maximum fitness values to reflect their new body type.
- Characters who are hard to please now get increased stress reduction from having at least one orgasm. Thanks to Paul G. on Patreon for writing the post I was replying to when I thought of this.
- Doubled the effect of the condom-damaging-secretions trait, as requested on Patreon by Lilbobchicago.
- New age category: the somewhat-clumsily named Eighteen or nineteen. I know that Late Teens would be more consistent with the existing ages, but for staying-out-of-prison reasons I want to be very clear that characters are over 18. This age category can appear on NPCs, be used for custom NPCs, and chosen for the player.
- Your children now have names which are chosen (from a number of preset choices) when the baby is born. You can also ask your partner to name the child, if he's present. Beware though, certain men may use this as an excuse to give free rein to their egos.
- The following fixes were also made following initial bug reports on Patreon:
- Fixes to text issues. Thanks to Max Mustermann, Death25, Atc and Saur for reporting problems they found.
- Added a new cheat option: Vow Master. This forces your partner to accept any vows you request. His ability to make demands is unchanged and he can still break off the engagement if you refuse something that's particularly important to him.
- Fixed an issue reported by Cubano where a boastful partner could name a child after himself even if he wasn't the father.
- Fixed an issue reported by Secondarian where the PC's age wasn't being correctly displayed on the character screen (this was still hardcoded to show Early Twenties, an oversight from beforehand).
- Fixed an issue reported by Secondarian where under some circumstances the event where your fiancé raises his demands wouldn't fire a second time if you broke off your engagement and then got engaged again later.
- Fixed an issue reported by Saur where the 'sleep together' scene wasn't properly handling the “always accept sex” vow.
- Also fixed similar problems with several other scenes reported by Max Mustermann.
- Fixed a bug with the “help with kids” vow reported by Momokuma.
- Following an issue raised by Saur, added alternative text when a request is refused because the NPC would ask for a favour, but he has no further favours to ask for.
- Fixed an issue reported by Max Mustermann where the “go on/off pill” vows weren't changing your pill status when first activated.
- Fixed (I think) an issue related to scene transitions reported by Monokuma and Death25
- Fixed an issue reported by Max Mustermann where saying goodbye to your repairman boyfriend could lead to him staying anyway, but flirting with him would guarantee his departure – he is now likely to stay over if you flirt as well.
