Newlife 0.4.24

Hello everyone!

Newlife 0.4.24 has been released. Early-access Patrons can find it in the creations section here. The changelog is below.

The previous version is now public. You can download it using the links on the right-hand side of the blog. The public version's changelog is here.

As usual, saved files & templates from older versions probably won't work with newer ones.

For new players - just use one of the links to the right to get a zipfile containing Newlife. Once unzipped, you'll see a folder containing .jar and .exe files. Either one of these will run the game.

For either version you'll need to have Java installed. A lot of programs use Java so you might well already have it. If the jar shows up as an unrecognised file type, then you probably don't. In that case you can get it from http://www.java.com/
The exe should tell you if you don't have the right version on your computer, but you'll still need to install java to run the game.
There's a guide for new players here which includes some troubleshooting tips for installation & downloading.

This version adds the small-cock trait, along with updates to existing scenes where an NPC's cock size is relevant (so, most of them).

I decided not to add a new scene for this trait - the ideas I had just felt like re-hashing the same sort of writing that I'd just added to older scenes.
Instead I looked over a bunch of change requests from players, including a sizeable one that'd been languishing on the todo-list for years and that I was reminded of by some recent discussions.
As a nice bonus, I've also been able to spare my back the pressure of end-of-month crunch time by getting it out a bit earlier than usual.

The next update will add a "bad in bed" trait for NPCs, and I will be adding a new scene to go alongside it, although I haven't thought up any ideas yet so if I get really stuck then I may end up going back to my small-cock ideas after all!

The one after that will be PMW - the vote's currently ongoing and I won't be tallying the results until the 30th so it can't be the next release.

After those two, the relationships update will be almost done. I might take a release or two to add more wedding-day content, and I'll think about whether I have any ideas for relationship-themed random events that are so good they justify delaying the long-anticipated major-update vote by another release. All in all though, I think 0.5.0 is not far off..

Changelog:

Major changes & additions:
  • Added the small_cock trait for male NPCs. This has been integrated into existing scenes, with a focus on “disappointment” content for characters who take the likes-big trait. The trait can sometimes appear in conjunction with the large cock-head trait, which somewhat mitigates its negative effects.
Characters who don't have the likes-big trait will occasionally get descriptive text mentioning his size but will generally not get any negative arousal or relationship effects from it.
The trait is somewhat rare, although more likely for doormats. Players specifically wanting to see it might be best off using a custom character.
  • Added an option to skip sex scenes, as originally suggested by Vengeance1701 and more recently discussed on the tfgs forums following a post by cd13. This must be enabled in the options screen before it'll be available in-game. Once enabled it'll appear at the bottom of the list in make-out scenes. It must be chosen in the make-out before actual sex starts and the game will decide what happens. The action list is wrap-around so you can quickly get to this choice by pressing the up-arrow and then enter.
By default auto-sex will not result in your character losing her virginity or anal virginity as I assume players will want to actually play out those scenes. You can change this in the options.
Using auto-sex for scenes like the prostitution or blackmail ones that require specific outcomes will only work if the “preserve virginity” option doesn't interfere.
Minor changes:
  • Impregnators will no longer use condoms on their own. They can still agree when the PC asks for one and then try to sabotage it, but it doesn't make much sense for them to put one on if she's fine with them going bare. Thanks to the patron who reported this issue: as it was over PM they might want to stay anonymous so I won't credit them by username.
  • Added some more alternative text to the “move cock away” action reflecting penis size for characters who prefer big ones.
  • Made the willpower check for refusing anal sex easier, as requested by Sync.
  • Removed the willpower penalties for being in a relationship with the man for non-romantic characters and reduced them slightly for romantics. The penalty for being in love is unaffected but this should stop love+marriage from having such a dramatic effect on will checks.
  • Added pink legwear, as suggested by Morion.
  • Increased the relationship benefits of winning the couples dance competition.
  • Made the cheater trait a bit more common: a selfish man with the likes-to-share trait now has a 30% chance of getting it, up from 20% before.
  • Added an alternative line for the “shocked” reaction on discovering pregnancy for men with the hates-condoms trait (where they're overwhelmed by the reality even though they must have know it could happen). This will hopefully reduce the number of odd situations such as one reported by jjrider where a condom-hating boss will comment that the PC may end up needing maternity leave only to react with surprise when she later gets pregnant.
  • Added the ability for baby-crazy PCs to demand their husband get them pregnant as punishment for cheating, as suggested by MadVoorpak
  • Added some missing relationship modifiers to losing your virginity in the cowgirl position, which should bring it more in-line with the male-dominant ones.
  • Adjusted some of the relationship effects of losing your virginity.
  • The surprised orgasm is now not available for characters who've already climaxed in the scene-chain unless they also have the cute trait (where there's potentially an element of the pc pretending to be surprised in order to fit the innocent way she wants to be seen). Thanks to Luna for reporting the issue with repeat orgasms still being surprising.
  • Renamed the “flirt with someone” action to “flirt with a man” following a suggestion by highland_master18
  • Fixed a bug reported by mn16tor where the action to find a lover at the end of your house-party had incorrect conditions and would only appear when there were no men present.
  • As suggested by Morion, added an alternative to the “tell him you're ready” action for characters that have told the NPC they're saving themselves for marriage.
Changes for user-submitted content:
  • None, but some scenes may need to be updated to handle the SMALL_COCK trait.
Bugfixes:
  • Fixes to text issues. Thanks to Saur, Antage, Secondarian, OrangeJuice and Sync for reporting some of these.
  • Changed the shyness-cure scene to not add the CAME_INSIDE sexual activity unless it was also adding SEX, as the cheating confrontation scene freaks out if it detects “severe” level cheating without some form of penetrative sex. This has been replaced with TOUCH_COCK. Thanks to Antage for reporting this, along with an especially helpful tip that made it much easier to track down.
  • Fixed a bug where the oral/HJ/titjob scene wasn't checking the NOT_CHEATING flag before incrementing the TIMES_UNFAITHFUL stat.
  • Fixed a bug reported by Primer where the cheating scene wasn't updating the female NPC's virginity if the PC interrupts during her husband's orgasm.
  • Fixed a bug reported by Garnet1where cheating on the PC's husband could incorrectly lead to a breakup despite the text implying that following marriage he's stuck with her.
  • Fixed an issue reported by MadCat where the date scene wasn't clearing condom-refusal, potentially leading to odd outcomes like the “no condom, no sex” choice unlocking during shower sex.
  • Fixed a bug reported by MadCat where the hotel prostitution scene wasn't blocking condom requests in the insemination path.

.
Enjoy the new version, and let me know if you find any bugs!

  1. Will 0.5 have shoes? ;P
    Great update, as usual!

    1. He's indicated that shoes are a really low priority thing for him (if at all) so don't really count on this ever appearing really.

      I just like the tease...

      ;P

      Thx!

    3. Thanks! No shoes in 0.5. In fact, adding the "inept" trait for the next release has been an absolute nightmare and I really need to clamp down more on "complexity" changes.

I've been saying that for years, but then I'll have an idea I like and I'll put something in anyway. I really need more discipline there because the bigger the codebase gets the worse it is to trawl through the whole thing to find passages that need an update for new traits or game-mechanics.

  2. I have a question though, how to trigger "insemination path" during the Hotel Prostitution event? I've encountered several other paths (regular sex, oral and anal) but I can't seem to trigger that other one. I even made a custom NPC with the SLEAZY and IMPREGNATOR traits and still nothing.

  4. Unless extremely aroused in almost every sex scene you can choose 'drop to your knees' -> 'stop being intimate'. That feels a bit out of place and a free escape card, you can't stop making out from main options, but you can always go down and drop immediately.

  5. I've gone through 3 play-thrus in a row of the public version where my PC hasn't been able to fall in love with her boyfriend. They're not jerks or selfish and she's not aromantic or bitchy. Is this a bug or is there another cause I'm unaware of?

  6. I think I've found a bug. In the "Tanya" storyline (where your impregnator friend (not boyfriend) asks for help with his ex, Tanya), he's supposed to come back and visit you when you are fertile and not pregnant. However, it seems that if you were on the pill (even if it was before the event seems to have triggered) and then you go off of the pill), the impregnator friend has lost track of your cycle. He never returns after asking for help with Tanya. The only ways I've found around this are to either go back on the pill or become pregnant, which causes him to show up (even though he shouldn't show up when you're pregnant... and it's counter-productive for him to show up after I've gone back on the pill).

I've noticed this because I've been trying to remain free from pregnancy while still getting the impregnator as a friend, and I thought the quickest way would be to let him fuck me while I'm on the pill, but apparently using the pill (and then going off of it so he can impregnate me during the event) breaks the scenario.

    1. Hi, thanks for the bug report!

I think this is a quirk of the random-event-weighting combined with the scene's special conditions rather than an outright bug.

Firstly, there won't be any impact due to previous pill-taking because the game only tracks wether the PC is on the pill now, not if she's been using it in the past.

Assuming nothing special's happening to block the event (I'll give details below) then the weight is 250 which is high but not ridiculously so. For comparison "nothing happens" has a weight of 1000 and "mugging" has a weight of 80.

However, the check is only made on fertile days OR if the PC is on the pill OR if she's pregnant (under certain circumstances). This means that it'll tend to happen 4x faster if you're on the pill. I think this is why you're seeing those results.

The reason for this is that the game tries to put the event on a risky day as that's a more interesting time for it to fire, but it'll ignore this if the PC is on the pill because in that case it doesn't really matter what time in her cycle it fires.

      The full conditions are:
      - Relevant NPC exists (they must still be a friend and not the bf)
      - Has run the first event and has not yet run the 2nd one.
      - The PC is not in the last trimester of pregnancy (as it'll be more interesting to wait until she can get pregnant again, but if she's in the early stages then there's too much of a risk of the game ending first).
      - If the PC is in the 1st of 2nd trimester of a known pregnancy then the below conditions are ignored and the event can always fire.
      - The (non-pregnant) PC is not on a safe day, or she's on the pill AND doesn't have the forgetful/unusual-body-chemistry traits.
      - The PC is either on a fertile day or on the pill.

      The upshot is:
      - Early-pregnancy or pill + not forgetful/unusual-body-chemistry : any week
      - Pill + forgetful/unusual-body-chemistry : 3 weeks from 4 (risky or normal)
      - Not on pill or pregnant: 1 week from 4 (only risky).

This is obviously an issue (if you, as a player, are noticing it!) so I'll make a change to increase the event weighting in that last situation.

  7. What about abort an unwanted child, getting divorced or break up while being engaged?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You can break up while engaged - it's the "return his ring" action accessed from important talk at home. Disabled for the highest level of Love (or 2nd highest if you're romantic).

I don't plan to add divorce. Having a marriage be something the pc is 'stuck with' makes for a more interesting gameplay experience especially for more submissive PCs.

You could set up a custom scene to do a divorce using the "breakup" method on the NPC object, but I won't be adding one to the main game.

Similarly, I won't be adding abortion, the ability to give babies up for adoption, or anything along those likes. That's becuase it makes the pregnancy-risk content much more impactful if an accidental pregnancy (or one you're tricked into by an impregnator) will always mean actually having a baby. If you want absolute full control over your character's fertility then take the "infertile" trait and get a fertility treatment from your doctor to disable it when you want kids.
